Writing a sermon is a lot like untangling last year’s Christmas lights that were hastily thrown into a box, covered, and stored away in an attic. You get a strand, make some progress, and encounter the biggest knot possible. You work your way through that knot and make some more progress only to discover more knots. After a few hours, a couple of beers, some huffing and puffing, you end up with an untangled strand ready for hanging. Just make sure you plug it in first before you put it up to make sure there are no lights out and you have a dead strand.

...and make sure you don't get shocked plugging the lights in!
This is a good analogy :)
